  • Adding to Pauls note, and I'm showing my age here!

You fit them on the loose bit of strap after the buckle, and they stop the end of the strap sliding through when you lift the release on the buckle, so you would adjust the strap to a point where you can put your foot in, then fit the button, so each time you release the strap it opens to the same point. The button is also something useful to grab hold of when tightening the straps, and you can cut off the redundant piece of strap after the button to make it neater --and save weight!

It makes you realise how much simpler life is with Look pedals.

PS. I still use toeclips and straps (complete with buttons) on the tandem!

I used to feed the strap through the second loop in the buckle and then fit the button. This left a loop of strap you could just hook your finger in to tighten the strap (very tight if needed). It made tightening much easier on a fixed wheel or during a race. It is strange how habits stick but when I re-started cycling (using clipless pedals) after a 35 year lay-off it took an age to stop reaching down to release the straps.
