Help Needed!

I'm looking at getting a bike I can use cross country and also around town. I'm looking at spending 600-750.
I'm very tall so need a mens bike. I've been advised from my local bike shop that a Kona Caldera would be best. Apparently Konas are great bikes for tall people as the handle bars are slightly higher than other brands... I prefer a more upright position rather than a racing position.
I've been looking online and have found that I can get huge reductions in price by getting 07 brands, could anyone suggest a Kona that is like the Caldera? I would like to get as much bike for my money as I can!!!!!!!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I'm quite a novice and have limited knowledge!
Thanks in advance.....

When you say tall how tall are we talking?
I'm a tall bloke at 6'7", but knowing your height would aid us in helping with your question.
As for riding position - that can all be adapted through stem and bar changes (which is what I'm in the process of doing)

Sorry that would help!!!
I'm 6'2 with a 37 inside leg.0 -
Well I have a 37 and 1/4 inside leg so we're in the same territory I ride a 22" Giant XTC 1 which even at it's XL size is light and very fast IMO.
I've not much experience of the Kona range, but as most people will tell you get some test riding done at an accommodating local bike shop.
Different manufacturers offer different geometry, so recommending a particular bike is hard. I found Giant to be great as the combination of a long top tube and stem catered for my long torso and reach. Even now though I'm still tinkering with stems and bars to get the optimum riding position.
You've got a decent budget so you shouldn't have any problem.
