Question about my fork

Sorry for what might seem some silly questions but i'm a complete noob at this and still have to gather a lot of basic information
I've bought the Mongoose Tryax Elite 2008 bike and it has this fork: SR Suntour XCM-HLO 100mm travel with 30mm stanchions adjustable preload and lock out. When I turn the preload knob not much happens, can't feel much difference between the - and the +. Is it possible that something is broken?
Also there is a sticker on the fork and it says thet it is intended for 'leisure cross country' riding, not for downhill, jumping etc. So how much abuse can it take? Is it just for riding on flat and absorbing the occasional pot holes?

it is normal.
and not much really."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

As nick says. The preload only sets the height of the fork, and initial force to get it moving. And no, its not a DH fork or jump fork.0

While your fork isn't for proper DH riding or dirt jumping, it can certainly stand up to more than riding on the flat and going over "the odd pothole".
It should be able to handle most riding where your wheels don't leave the ground, so most of the trails you're likely to ride in your local woods - and even red and some black routes at trail centres.
If it's the same fork as came on my wife's Giant XTC, it's quite heavy but a surprisingly good performer with a nice smooth action.0
