After wearing out my 2nd bottom bracket in about a year and a half I've decided to upgrade my existing Truvativ Isolflow with internal BB setup.

Merlin seem to have some good deals at the moment and I'm looking at the following:

Truvativ Firex Team (complete with external BB) for £45

Truvatic Stylo Team (external BB) for £70

Anyone got any opinions/experience, good or bad?

Am I also right in thinking that an external bearing system is harder wearing?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers. :D

For those prices, I'd look at the Shimano Deore and LX external BB set ups.

But if you want the best trade off in durabilty and stiffness, Shimano Octalink all the way.

Cheers Super, not too many other comments about.

In your opinion is it worth paying the extra for the XT - £95 @ Merlin?

    Thanks again.
  • The new xt is gorgeous, and they have fixed the ring durability issues and the bearings are better sealed/
  • if you get the XT one you will need to get your BB shell faced, make sure your local shop do this before it is fitted.

bare that in mind, or you will Pi$s your money up the wall

quite fancy the new 08 XT myself but my 06? LX is still running sweet as with nearly 2k miles on it, at this rate i'll just keep replacing worn rings until the arms snap off hehe. would 08 XT rings fit my LX 4 bolter? as that steel on carbon middle ring sounds like it will last forever on the new XT but would steel rings wear the chain quicker?

After visiting my LBS to get the tools to remove my crank and BB, got offered a good deal on a XT setup all faced and fitted in the shop. Worked out cheaper than buying the crank and tools etc online and doing it myself.

Ordered and being fitted next week. :D

    Thanks for all the advice.

you'll also need this with lx and deore HTII cranks.

yeah its with al hollowtech II BB's
  • I replaced by X type ext BB with a new hope one last weekend, and it is as smooth as silk. 65 for the stainless version is within the price of the 2 you mentioned, and like all things hope, should last incredibly well. The other thing to note, is that the hope BB's are user serviceable and the bearings are replaceable, so long term runnig costs should be a lot less than other systems.

Worth considering for the future Spud Son but with my existing set up I don't think I could go straight to the Hope external BB without changing my cranks anyway.

Don't depress me now with other options - I'm on a HIGH! :D
