Hi,

Ok following a thread i posted a few days back, I'm plannin on getting some new gear shifters (STI ones), but something bugs me.. the ones I want are dura-ave 10 speed ones, however I only have 8 gears on my back wheel.

Is this going to cause compatability problems etc or am I safe to buy this?

If you only have 8 gears then you need 8 speed STIs. You'll find them now and again on ebay - and don't worry if they're old - I've an 8 speed Dura Ace set up which is now 16 years old (and relegated to the winter bike) but still works just fine.
The deal is that Shimano made the cogs and spaceers narrower so they could fit 9 speed onto the same freehub body as 8 speed and then did the same again when they went from 9 to 10 (unlike Campag, who went for a physically wider spread, which means the wheel needs to be dished more - not good - but at least the set up isn't critically super-fine and as it is with shimano 10 speed.)
If you have 8 gears on your back wheel then either get 8 speed STIs as mentioned above or see if you can fit a 9 speed cassette and then get 9 speed STIs - which are more readily available. I wouldn't bother with 10 speed, and , for sure, 10 speed STIs will not work well with your 8 gears: each click of the right hand STI lever will move the rear derailleur, but not far enough to shift sweetly onto the next cog - there's only 8 of them in the space traversed by 10 clicks.

thanks for the information briank, was kind of hoping that wouldn't be the answer, but atleast I know.

Not really in a position to be upgrading the casette aswell,

On a upside, I guess I could have another solution... I could get the 10 gear shifters now and use the left one (ok that means I wont have shifters to match for a while) but It would "work".

When I have more money in pocket, I could then upgrade to a 10 gear wheel.

Then again I cant remove the casette holder because its stuck on too tight so I'd need a new wheel too

(Yes I have tried allen wrenching it out etc etc, instead of coming loose, the allen slot just worn away into a circle.

Why the need for Dura Ace ? You could get 105 STI's, 10 spd cassette and chain for the price of the Dura Ace STI's if your budget is tight.

As for you wheel, it sounds as though you're trying to remove your freehub which you don't need to do. Get a cassette tool and a chain whip if you don't already have them to remove the lock ring, the cassette should then slide off the freehub body. A 10 spd cassette should fit into the same space as an 8 spd one, just need smaller spacers between the sprockets.

I was trying to remove the freehub yes.. its knackered!

It doesnt sit still and wobbles. However its not coming off!

Turns out I found a website for a local bike shop that sells the same STI gear shifters I have now, and they're £70... brilliant!

I just have to hope they have them in stock now.

I think you should get that sorted whilst you're there!

    iga,

do you think I stand a chance of it getting the old freehub off without rendering the whole bike useless?

Its pretty mashed up inside now... saying this I saw in cycling plus magazine some shimano RS20 wheels.. They dont look bad, defiantly not bad for the money!

The trouble is I dont want to take the bike down to the shop because if the wheel is rendered useless, then I am basically forced to buy a new wheel without looking at the selection I have, as I need the wheel to commute with!

The freehub seems to be holding up, its been like it for a good while.

I have been riding on the 1 top gear for a few days now and I actually seem to be coping... makes me wonder maybe I should just sit back and save the money until pay day, then do a nice upgrade to new wheels, new 10 spd gears and new gear shifters..

...Oh the choices!. I think i better sleep on it lol.

What exactly is the problem ? I'm unsure from reading your posts what the problem with the freehub is.

Have you had someone at your lbs to look at it ?

I had halfords look at it (yeah I know..) and they puch a big oversized allen key through my wheel... whacked it with hammer etc (by that I mean the wrench not the wheel) and it just wont shift. Looks like when the person built the bike @ LBS they made it so that it aint got a chance of coming apart again.

It seems that the freehub bearings inside are a bit gone as the whole cage wobbles (not a big wobble, but its there).

When i initially found the problem I confirmed the freehub was broke, and got a replacement. Just never got the old one off to put the new one on.

    If you wan't to save a bit money more try campag 10 speed levers which work with a Shimano 8 speed. I have these;

working with a dura ace eight speed block and rear mech with no problems, they also look nicer with the gear cable running under the bar tape.
