Given a budget of around £1500-£2000 what hardtail to buy?
Focus Raven Pro
Specialized Stumpjumper HT Carbon
Scott Scale 20
Currently testing a Specialized Stumpjumper Expert Full Sus. but finding it hard work on the flat stuff.. Thinking that maybe Full Sus. is not the way to go!!
Doing around 100-150 miles a week, 80% on roads and flat/gravel trails
Any advice would be very grateful..

Love my Scott Scale can't find any fault with it at all. Very light very stiff great piece of kit.
Loads of reviews here http://www.mtbr.com/reviews/XC_Hardtail/index_S.shtml for all the Scott Scales and the Carbons all get pretty much top marks.
However, if 80% of your 150 is on roads... is that commuting? Are you sure you want a Scott as It is however, very much an XC race bike and not a commuter. Also would look very very VERY tempting if left out anywhere!!! Mine is never out of my sight when out. Sorry if I'm speculating incorrectly :oops:0 -

However, I'm now using the bike everyday of the week to get backwards and forwards to work as well as trail riding in the evening's and weekends... Also with the intention of trying some more exciting trails etc.
Do I try and upgrade some of the components on the bike I have i.e. forks, wheels etc??
Or do I go out and spend the money on a better bike?? If so, what?? Hard Tail or Full Sus?? What make?? How much??
Can you help??
I see from a previous post you do commute.... Wouldn't use a £2k bike for that - unless you can secure it absolutely, inside - preferably - a vault with security guards :shock:0 -
Many thanks for the comments..
What started off with upgrading my kraken has now let to far more adventurous trails during the weekends and evenings and now with thoughts that we will try and get to grips with some of the trails in Wales and other areas, feel that I want something with better components etc.
Since changing the forks on the Kraken, its made a huge difference and thanks for the information/advice before..
However, with the thought of now changing the wheels, brakes, components etc.. I'm thinking I'm probably going to better off spending my money on a much better quality bike.
The bike is locked away when not riding so security not a problem...0 -
Why not buy 2 bikes: £1k on a really good hardtail and £500 on a road bike for commuting.
Just a thought.I'm only concerned with looking concerned0
