What pedals to choose?

Have been getting increasingly into mountain biking since last summer and am now starting to take a more critical look at my ride - GT Aggressor XC3.
Looking to uprade the pedals (well, you have to start somewhere & the budget's not big) but have been baffled by the different types available - flats, clipless, egg beaters etc? Would be grateful for some basic info on the merits of each, and some advice on a cost effective set for a weekend warrior in Essex who makes occasional trips to the white knuckle trails in Wales.

well decide what kind of pedals you want first, flat or clipless
if you buy clipless you also need some shoes with cleats which will add to the cost0 -
I went straight to egg-beaters and found them really easy to use - just stamp on them and they engage. Haven't had any trouble unlocking either - think they're great!0

Get some quality flat pedals.
Much less chance of not getting on with them.
DMR V8s do everything you ask of them.0 -

If you want flats then Wellgo MG1s are the best , cheapest way to go."Melancholy is incompatible with bicycling." ~James E. Starrs0
