i have a set of GP400 & GP400S continental tyres and on both there are a pair of dimples in the surface of the rubber - are these meant to wear indicators or are they both from dodgy batches?

Wear indicators0

Thanks, presumably then when the rest of the rubber wears down to the base of the dimples they're shot, right?pm0

They'll be shot long before that happens0

give it a few miles and you'll be more worried about the sidewalls pealing apart. I did always think though that having a thinner part of tyre for a wear indicator was a silly idea. I know the chances of either of those two bits running over something sharpish is small, but you know its going to happen in the dark and wet....0

actually i the sidewalls are going first (after about 2000 miles) so i may change them this weekendpm0

are you getting threads comming off them?0

Just one so far but yes. Does this mean i'm about to sufffer a blow down a steep and twisty lane :shock:pm0

Hopefully not! But its the reason I stopped using them, they seemed to start fraying really early.0

I think Continental tyres tend to have a flimsy carcass and soft and thin rubber, and the models I have tried wore quickly and were prone to cuts and punctures0

In the last 12 months, I've had GP4000 25c with reflective sidewalls, GP4000-S (little used as on best bike), GP4 Season.
They've all been absolutely fine, and I've never had a puncture with any of them even though I ride on pretty poor quality roads, though to be fair the most miles on any of them was 2,000 on the GP4000 - and they're all still in service.
People either love or hate Contis. My only poor quality pair were some cheap ones that I had on my 27x1 1/4" station hack - they blew off the rim!0
