Im looking to get some shoes like these:
Specialized Sport MTB

However, these are designed for use with SPD pedals, my question is will they work fine with normal platform pedals?

I ask only because I notice that shoes like these have a gap in the ball of the shoe for where the SPD 'thing' goes, and when using a platform pedal, this is where I want all the grip.

If they're anything like my S-Works shoes the platform is very stiff (carbon) with no flex and the grip is solid plastic which I wouldn't have thought would work very well. They are designed to be used with SPD to secure into the pedal. The bit where you say you want the grip has NO grip at all.

For flats you'll want something along the lines of Five Ten shoes. they're ultra-grippy for flat pedals.

I have those exact shoes. CJW is bang on the money, the soles are solid plastic, fantastic shoe with SPDs but I really wouldn't like to use them with flats,
  • they wont work well with flats. i use shoes with more flexible, softer soles with a waffle type design or similar from the ball of my foot all the way to include the middle of my foot.
Theres quite a few available, some good choices (imo) might be the 5-10s as recommended above, vans, etnies or globe for example. just check the sole is fully waffled.
  • I have those shoes, and they won`t work with flats. Are you looking for an SPD shoe that also works with flats?I also have a pair of Shimano MT30 and they do work with flat pedals. Not generally available now but the MT31 has the same sole.
    Also look at Shimano MP56/66.

I've just bought a set of Marzocchi bomber FiveTens for my flats and I'm about to have my first ride with them if the sun stays out
