I've been actively reading this forum now for a few months but have never posted so hi to everyone.
I want to start upgrading my bike (Bianchi 1885 Veloce) and i am after some advice from all you knowledgable people.
first I want to get a better/ lighter wheel set but keep with the Italian theme of the bike. My budget will be up to about £400. The wheels the interest my are the Campagnolo Neutron
or the Fulcrum racing 3. I know there is alot to be said about hand built wheels but if i'm honest i'm a bit anal when it comes to components and i like every thing to match.
If anyone has any experience or advice on these two or even any others then it would be very much appreciated.
P.S. For the record i'm not a racer and cycle for fun and fitness and would like to take part in a few Sportives this year.
Thanks in advance. MM

Couldn't agree more, go for the Ultras they are superb wheels'Hello to Jason Isaacs'0 -
Thanks for the replies.
When looking on the campag web site they're listed as low profile. My worry about this is that there is obviously less rim height which would mean less material being used resulting in less strength. I might be wrong but would this mean that they are not suited to the heavier rider? I'm not the heaviest person in the world (14st and getting lighter) but the web site doesn't give any weight guides. Any ideas on the maximum weights?0 -

I'm a tub of lard nowadays and upto to a recent purchase of some Shamal Ultras a set of the Neutrons predecessor , Nucleons ( same thing but with stainless spokes ), supported my bulk without complaint for most of this decade . A really fine wheel and utterly hassle free despite my having to ride some of the most pock marked shite'est roads in the U.K. and Europe . The new Ultras should be a step up again in quality .
Incidentally , I would cherish the low side profile of the Neutrons as they maintain a classic aesthetic in looks . They look ' proper ' . It's obviously subjective but I can't be doin' with the modern tendency toward deep profile rims . The Shamal's med.section are on the limit for me . A deep section spoils the line of the bike to my eyes with their blockiness . They don't like a sideways breeze either .
No , keep your Zipps and Cosmics and the rest of 'em ."Lick My Decals Off, Baby"0 -
I've done a google search for the wheels and two places have come up at around the £400 mark. One is www.shinybikes.com/bikes/campagnolo-200 ... -pair.html and the other is www.totalcycling.com/index.php/product/ ... ncy&id=GBP
Does anyone have any experience of buying from these sites?, as it's always a risk buying from a web site blind.0 -

Forgive me for being stupid but having just looked at the Ribble site and seeing the Eurus wheelset fo £10more, seeing the RRP, would this not be a better wheel?0

They are both similar wheels, I prefered the Neutron Ultras. I don't like the G3 spoking pattern.
I'd get the Neutron Ultras, other people would get the Eurus. Which would you rather?
With the Eurus, you pay more for the G3 spoking pattern, and them supposedly being better looking. I wouldn't say they were better wheels.0 -
I think i'm going to have to have a look at them in the flesh. I like the spoke pattern of the Neutron and the silver colour of the Eurus.
Thanks for you help and advice Redddraggon, much apreciated.0 -
If I was buying new wheels, I'd go for the Neutrons. I have a pr of zondas and a pr of eurus, and like them both very much indeed. Great all round wheels, so much so I did PBP on the Zondas
They both are great downhill, but the Zondas are heavy (I've had mine 5 years) and the Eurus could be stiffer.
Having ridden a pr for a while, I believe the Neutrons are lighter and stiffer
they also came out very well in a recent CW test
I loath the carbon wheels, the smell and sound when braking, the braking in the wet etc“It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best..." Ernest Hemingway0
