Just recovered from snapped achilles and moved to Uppermill from Lake District so now ready to get out on bike . Seems to be lot of on road routes in Saddleworth but are there any decent mountain bike trails ?

  • Loads. Get Oudoor Leisure 21 1:25 000. All the bridleways between Denshaw and Hebden Bridge and across to Marsden are great. Nice riding round past all the reservoirs. There was a killer loop in MBR a few years back which covered this area (i rode it in a snowstorm with trails that had turned into sheets of ice (hairy). If you have the enegy or drive you can take in Hebden Bridge to Todmoden via the moors above and below the towns. The Mary Townley Challenge is run up there and across towards Manchester.

As Not Another Hill said, Calderdale (Todmorden, Hebden Bridge) and Rossendale (Rawtenstall and Bacup) are good, plenty of hills, plenty of descents. The Mary Townley loop won't be far from you (It's a 47 mile loop which is part of the Pennine bridleway). You can probably access most of this area form the southern section of the Pennine Bridleway which runs from Buxton up to Littleborugh where it joins the MTL. I'm luck as I live on the Calderdale / Rossendale border almost smack bang in the middle of this lot :D .
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
