I understand, GS = Long arm, SS = Short arm.

What does the GS and SS stand for?

I understand that your not meant to use a short arm mech with a tripple chainset but should a long arm rear mech be fine for a double?

Thanks.

  • No idea what the GS or SS actually stand for.... maybe they don't.

Yes you can use a long arm mech just fine with a double.
If you look at mech specs they state...

Max sprocket (the largest sprocket to use)
    Min sprocket (the smallest)

    eg RD-7800 SS (duraace 10)
    Max - 27
    Min - 11

The specs also state Max front diff (the max difference in the number of teeth between your granny and big ring, be it triple, compact or double).
For the RD7800 SS its 16 teeth

    Total capacity is 29 teeth

    For GS it is -
    max - 27
    min - 11
    front diff - 22
    total diff - 37

As long as you stay within these it will be fine

GS and SS are Shimano part number nomenclatures for long arm and short arm rear mechs
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • Thanks for the info!
