New London commuting route - advice please!

I'm starting a new job in a couple of weeks, and need to figure out a route from Finsbury Park to Richmond. Google maps suggests lots of nasty/dangerous roads; I'd appreciate a reasonably direct route (avoiding the West End if possible). I'm fairly fit and don't mind a few hills - my main concern is to avoid horrors like the A41 etc.
Any suggestions?

That'd be an all day commute. You'd have to leave the night before
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Move to Richmond/Twickenham...it's green down here with a river and everything :0)

If you can work out a route to Hyde park, you can go straight down Kensington rd to Hammersmith to Barns-mortlake, then down the A205 South Circular

The other (longer) way would be get to the Victoria embankment, along the Thames to houses of Parliment, down to Mill bank, onto Chelsea embankment - new kings road - putney bridge - lower richmond rd - Queens ride -A205 to Richmond

The second route I know well and it's fine...the Chelsea embankment part is really quick, tho...avoid the painted pavements, sorry, "cycle paths" and stick to the road...although the other night there was a bit of a rough patch, so keep you're eyes open.

I've done this a few times, using the following route which avoids the worst roads:

    1. Cross the Holloway Road and head for Camden

    2. Camden to Baker St via the outer circle of Regent's Park

    3. Down Baker St to Hyde Park

    4. Through Hyde Park, past the Landmark Hotel and into the back streets of Belgravia and on to Sloane Sq

    5. King's Road to Putney Bridge

    6. Upper Richmond Road to your goal

TFL maps might be useful for you to refine the details.

a bit of searching on the tfl site will bring you up a cycle route

It prints out on several pages using adobe

Also ensure you have the free TFL cycle maps, available from the website or most LBS's
