Frustrating Injury woes!!!

As I've previously mentioned on other post's I'm currently having a huge painful problem with my lower back and left hip, groin, hamstring and ITB band. Well today I went to physio (which is provided by NHS) and my physio was 100% honest with me and told me that what she was doing is not helping the injury at all and gave me a letter to give to the doctor and tell him that I should be referred to a specialist.
So I went to the doctor told him and gave him the letter which said same thing and he totally disagreed with the physio, gave me another 3 weeks off work and then told me to tell work when I get back to give me a desk job from now on (I'm a police officer) so I argued that this isn't healing the injury but I had no response at all he just kept telling me to see my occ health and sort out a desk job, oh and to keep excersising! I explained that I would love to but unfortunately I walk with a limp cant run bend or twist or it causes extreme fuc*ing pain!!!
He explained that if I do see the specialist then he will look at operations or hip replacement's and I answered back what if I need one and he said he didn't think I did!?!?1 How he is supposed to know from me sitting in the chair I'll never know!!!
So I've told work who are being extremely good about the situation and I'm trying to sort out seeing someone with them but it just makes you think what the hell is the point in paying for national insurance??? I've never had a problem with doctors before and have no idea what to do next! Do I get a second opinion? I'm moving out of the borough on Saturday so have to register in my new borough so is it worth waiting to see the new doctor? Unfortunately I can't afford to go private or seek private physio/osteo so that avenue is out.

  • Get a new GP, he sounds like an a*se to me. Ideally though you do need to see a specialist, and unfortunately most of the nhs isn't concerned with sports injuries, so long as you can be patched up enough to live a sedentary life job done. I say most because I'm sure not all GP's / specialists have that rather cavalier attitude to these kinds of problems.
  • He sounds about as good as my GP.

"I've had groin strain for 6 weeks and it hasn't went away"

"Rest more and take ibuprofen. Bye"

Obviously I wasn't resting enough by not cycling for 6 weeks.

  • It's scary that we trust these people with our lives!!! Only two years ago my mum went to the doctor with a chronic sore throat, she was told to take some cough medicine and throat sweets and try not to talk! A month later it hadn't disappeared so she returned, same diagnosis, two months later and a different doctor she was sent to a specialist who took samples and two weeks later it come back that she had throat cancer!!! Specialist said this should have been picked up months back, luckily she beat it but it makes you think that if she had seen that same doctor again she could have just kept fobbing her off and she'd be dead now!!!
Why is it that rest always seems the answer yet a huge percentage of this country are obese because of so much 'rest', I know diet is due to a lot of it but I know people who eat pretty good but don't do anything and are overweight. It seems like some if not all departments of the NHS are pulling each other in different directions.
I know that's going off on a tangent but I was really annoyed with today's 'health advice'.

That sounds about par for the course given the NHS.

There is a specialist sports injuries clinic at Guys hospital london bridge. Not been there myself thank goodness but it might be worth trying to get them to take you on on the basis of the physio's letter. Alternatively push your GP hard for a referral.

If all else fails try making a formal complaint to to the practice, it is not the preferred course of action but if it gets you into see a specialist then its worth it!

    Good luck

Well, I'll play devils advocate. What sort of treatment do you think he should be doing?
Is there an operation for groin strain? I don't think so. If you complain enough I would
bet you could get a couple of steroid shots. This probably would help the healling
process. Most injuries don't heal quick enough for most people and some may
bother you off and on for the rest of you life. There is no set time frame for things
like this. Sure, it's frustrating, but you are not the only one to ever have to deal with
an injury that keeps you from doing what you want. Suck it up and tough it out.

  • Cheers for the advice. I will be changing doctors come next week so I think maybe I'll speak with the new doctor and go from there. Interesting about the clinic at Guy's. Maybe a phone call there might help.

It's dragging up an old issue I know but today I went to see my new doctor and it was like a breath of fresh air!!! Within minutes of explaining my situation I was sent for a x-ray on my hip and being referred to a neurosurgeon in approx 30 days! She also couldn't understand why my previous Doctor was unwilling to send me to a specialist! So the 3 month wait in pain I endured was a pointless waste of time and wouldn't have happened if I had been registered to the other doctor in the first place!!! It's frightening that our health service is in this terrible situation. Good thing is that I can ride my bike!!! Time to put the miles in!!!

Why would I expect an operation for groin strain? I didn't even expect steroid shots. What I wanted was a referal to a physio (which I did eventually get, although have waited over a month now for an appointment) who could diagnose and treat me properly and get me back on the road to recovery. Like I said, i'd have 6 weeks of complete rest, and was worried i'd done something more serious than a minor groin strain.

As it turns out, my groin is now fine. I took up running again and found it helped enormously, and i've managed to clock up nearly 500 miles on the bike in the past month. I'm hoping I still get an appointment with the physio.
