I am looking to buy a new set of Disc brakes. Quite fancy Avid Juicy 7's or Carbon. Can anyone recommend these or should i be buying something else?

Thanks for you help.

  • Take a look at Formula Oro Biancos,if you have money to burn. They have excelllent reviews.
    2006 Giant XTC
    2010 Giant Defy Advanced
    2016 Boardman Pro 29er
    2016 Pinnacle Lithium 4
    2017 Canondale Supersix Evo
  • Support British manufacturing and get HOPES.

    Still the best as well

I have Hopes, they're very good but I hear Formulas are better...

I think WMB are doing a massive disc brake test in this months mag...
  • I had Juicy Sevens on my last bike and have Juicy Carbons on my new bike. Both have excellent stopping power, never had any problems with them. If you've got the money, it has to be the pimpy carbons though!
  • for me, formulas ( as everyone on here goes on about them so much), avid codes, but as i'm going through a "Go British" stage, hopes are great :D
  • hopes are great but a pain to bleed if you're going to diy, whilst juicy 7 are good too and it only takes 10 mins to bleed perfectly and you don't need 16 hands to do it!!! you have to buy the bleeding kit, though...
  • XTR if you're feeling rich, and want some bling (and don't care about British manufacturing) - I think Merlin are still doing a complete set for 200 of your English pounds.
  • i have xtr rear brake, the new lever is exceptionally hard to get to work with anything other than original hoses but are worth the effort i assure you, they are amazing brakes look amazing, loads of modulation and outright power if you need it, lever feel and reach is also exceptional :)
If you aint in A&E, you aint riding hard enough

    Thanks for the advice.

So would the Formula ORO 24 be the one to get if i was getting Formula. I don't fancy the Hopes after reading some reviews on the Formulas. Loads more power and feel?
    Is this true?

What about setup and reliability of the Formulas???

Sorry for asking so many questions just don't want to waste my money?

    Thanks

From the reviews in WMB, they recommend:

For Trail: 1st. Hayes Stroker Trail 7in
    2nd. Formula Oro K24

All Mountain: 1st. Formula The One
    2nd. Avid Code 5

    HTH

  • If you want fit and forget brakes - go Avid. I am using Juicy carbons and they are pretty damn good!

I have always used Avid and found them to be very good.

I have just bought my first set of hope but havent fitted them yet... so can't comment on them

Ignore him ^ he is a tart. Noone has asked what you intend to use them for yet but I'm going to follow suit and suggest XTR as the best out there at the moment.

I ride mostly aggresive cross country and all mountain. No big DH or freeride stuff.

I will take a look at the xtr ones after your recomendations.

    Thanks
  • Hope pink ones with flowers on.

    Formula Oro
  • Just in case you're still considering the Juicy Carbons, Merlin are currently selling them for £200 a pair! RRP if you bough them seperately is around £340 - you'll struggle to get better value for money:

  • I've just got a set of Xt brakes on my new bike. I've only ridden it couple of times but the brakes have got loads of power and feel real nice as well. Never used to be a fan of the old Xt brakes but the new design get my vote.

I use Hayes 9 on my HT, they ok and work fine, but I would go for Xt, Avids or Formuler as they all seem to be the market leaders at the moment.
  • cant make an opinion on brakes i've never used, so out of those i *have* used, i like and trust shimanos the most. they've been the most consistent & have never let me down, requiring no maintenance other than the replacement of pads. now fitted to all my bikes.
also used maguiras, hopes & avid juicys. avid juicys were VERY unreliable on prelonged steeps (like in verbier), almost dangerous, as also found by other riders using them.

again not had an issue with my juicies even in alp conditions other than replacing pads as per normal. Now i have heard lots of comments that there are probs with avid brakes so i guess this must be with the avid redesigns rather than the original Formula designed ones (which mine are/were) Well moved on to formula on all mine as i have been less than impressed with the codes.

  • Juicys did used to have problems overheating on long descents but the new '08 brakes now use DOT 5.1 fluid instead of DOT 4. This takes 3 times longer to boil than DOT 4 which has solved the problem.

Thanks for all the advice. Decided to go for Formula ORO K24's 185 front / 160 rear. Will post what i think about them when they arrive.

    Thanks again

nice choice, ive got the 18s n i luv em!

and about the fluid for juicys, you could use 5.1 on the 07 model. just means you would have to rebleed thats all
