Chainset Worn?

Probably a stupid question but how do I know whether my chainset is worn?

Checked the bike today and there apperas to be a bit of play in the bottom bracket, this is the 2nd one, since new.The chainrings have never been replaced though, despite me changing the cassette.

Are there any classic signs to indicate whether it needs replacing to? The crankset at the moment is a bog standard Truvativ Isoflow but I was considering upgrading to either:

Truvativ Firex £45 at Merlin, or Truvativ Stylo £70, Merlin again, which come complete with BB's.

Anyone got any opinions :?:
