hy all i bought a hybrid last year but find it a bit slow and heavy especially up hills it has front suspention and rear seatpost suspention and i sometimes think the front suspention soaks up some of the cycling effort.

, purchased an old road style bike 52/40 front chainring 14-28 rear , cycle weighs 28lbs, feels quicker than the hybrid but my speed is simular.

i was torn between the specialised allez triple ,and the sirrus elite ,drops verses straight etc but wonder if any members own ,have owened sirrus and there views

when i purchased my hybrid i completly forgot about correct frame size, and think that may be a factor why i find it a bitt hard going (hills especially) having chosen the correect size large in my case for the elite i hope i will find things a bit easier and hopefully faster .

thank you

  • Hi - I used to have a sirrus - until the frame broke on me! It felt reasonably fast, but having drop handlebars has made a big difference. It's worth thinking about getting a 'proper' road bike if you feel the need for speed! If you're keen on Specialized, have a look at their Allez range, which have always got good reviews as an entry level bike.

I got into cycling last summer after buying a Sirrus Elite. It's a great bike, I average 15-16 mph on the hills around Winchester - so pretty fast for a hybrid.

However these days I do wish I had a bike with drop handle bars so I could get into a more aggressive position. Also I found my hands got tired quickly when I first started (probably gripping too hard) - this might not have happened if I had more hand positions available like on drops.

So with hindsight I should have probably bought myself an Allez - but it's a close thing.

    Hope this helps,

thanks all i was thinking i might go for the allez triple rather than the elite, but thought in the end the elite might be a bit more practicle, as i can fit a rack for instance, i do use ofroad cycle tracks which can be a bit rough.

picked up the elite this afternoon, using a gravel track speed was about 15mph using roughly the same gears as my other hybrid so not much differance there.

hoever using slightly uphill slopes, and a local hill which i normaly run out of steam about 2/3rds up, found i went up much easier and quicker on the elite.

not so much worried about speed but wanted a cycle that made climbing hills just a bit easier without going the mountain bike option,

going to try some of the hills and slopes that i cannot manage in one go on my hybrid and see how the elite compares.

    thank you

To be honest it sounds like you just need a bit of practice. One day you'll get to the top of that nasty hill only to discover that you'd forgotten to change down to the smallest chain ring :) I also found that clipless pedals made a big difference on the hills.
