So, I'm starting to build a little collection of bike specific tools, but I need some cable cutters.

What ones would you reccomend? Should I fork out £25 on a park tools/pedros one?

Or should I get a £10-£20 cheaper ones? Will the cheap ones still do the job?

Go to an electrical wholesalers and buy some cable shears, they're loads cheaper and will cut through any cable upto about 10mm thick

Got a pair of these. They feel good and solid and failry well made. Cut through Shimano brake outer cable really easily. If you're after bike-specific tools then you won't need to cut anything bigger. I guess only time will tell how well they last, but can't see me breaking these!

One fine day in the middle of the night, two dead men got up to fight. Back to back they faced each other, drew their swords and shot each other.
  • Merlin do a good budget pair for a tenner and they are spot on, even went through Goodridge hoses a treat and have all the bells and whistles on them.

I've got the Pedros cutters. £20 on CRC. They do a good job (used on tough XTR outers) and come with a lifetime guarantee. I'm not sure that an amatuer mechanic/bodger like myself really needs a lifetime guarantee though. In hindsight I probably would have gone for cheaper ones.

Ya, shop quality is nice if you work in a bike shop. But if you're like the rest of us and
pretty much just wrench on your own stuff you can easily get by with slightly lesser
grade tools. Then again if you've got lots of money!!!!!! Shop around and I'm sure you will
    find some good deals.

  • thats the ones, they have a bit for crimping the ends of cables, making the outers round again etc etc, so I was quite surprised how feature packed for £10. a good buy.

    Now you all tell me!

I spent about £23 on the Park ones because I didn't know if the budget alternatives would be any cop. They work perfectly though - as you'd expect. Like a hot knife through butter.
