Crankset wobble and injury...

Ahoy there,

I have suffered from a calf problem for ages.

About a year ago I got knocked off my bike and noticed that the front chainset had developed a small wobble. I thought it was slightly bent in the accident. (about 2-3mm lateral movement on the big ring) and thought nothing of it.

However I have just changed my chainset to a compact (brand new rings) and the wobble is still there. Suggesting that the wobble is from a bent bottom bracket not from a bent chain ring.

Do you think it is worth getting a new BB fitted ? And do you guys think that this wobble has contributed to my recurring injury? Any one had experiences of similar?

Ta,

Rick.

Definately get a new BB fitted, they are a consumable after all and it will have to go sooner or later.

I would think that a bent axle is a likely cause of your problem.

You'd have to be going some to bend a steel BB spindle rather than the crank itself - a bent crank is more likely to give you a knee problem rather than the calf. Remove the cranks and turn the spindle slowly by hand - line it up by eye with a frame tube and see if it moves as it turns.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • What is more likely is that the cranks are not sat square on the taper properly - this often leads to the runout being poor (or excessive wobble in laymans terms). Try refitting them ensuring they're clean and burr free, and see if that makes a difference
Has the head wind picked up or the tail wind dropped off???
