    prefer hydraulic.

My brother in law wants to get into mtb. Needs to loose a few pounds and doesn't want to spend too much but wants discs.

    any ideas?

Friend of mine just bought a 2008 Specialised Hardrock pro disc for £399

But have a look at Evans cycles, they have 2007 models for £369. You'll get a good idea of prices from here.

You might get a Giant or Mongoose etc a little cheaper, but expect to pay £350+

RThen again, if he isn't going to do anything more than a few fireroads and 'family' trails, he won't need hydraulics and would probably be happy with a Halfords bike or similar.

Not too sure about the brakes and the forks, but for £300 its not too shabby!

I think 'forum expert' was talking about Hydro disc bikes. and ill kinda agree with him there.
in fairness theres a lot to choose from in that range £400-£500 all with similar specs.

£450-500 gets you into the level of good bikes, below that thouigh there are a lot of very worthwhile entry level bikes for those on a tighter budget.
    Giant TCR advanced 2 (Summer/race)
    Merlin single malt fixie (Commuter/winter/training)
    Trek superfly 7 (Summer XC)
Giant Yukon singlespeed conversion (winter MTB/Ice/snow)

Look at the quality of other components, not just discs. Good fork over hydraulics anyday - no point going off rough terrain on a pogo stick - ypu wont be going fast enough to brake hard!

As Andy B says, Tyax Elite a great bike the money - damped fork, cable discs, 8spd, tough frame. A worthy MTB, despite what experts may think. ;-)
