Please Recommend Some Bib-Shorts...

Hi Gang

I'm looking for some decent bib shorts. However, Asos will only confirm me as an 'all the gear, no idea' type chap. I love the understated look of the Rapha stuff, but I'd struggle to justify £120.

Any other suggestions?

TIA :)

The dhb Earnley from Wiggle are very good, especially given the price. Can do long road or wet and gritty mountain bike rides in comfort.

Endura do good reliable kit. Their bibshorts are no exception.

I think the DHB ones are stupidly good value - you need to spend more than double to get something better. I'd try a pair (£30!) and then decide whether you really want to spend more. I've got a few rapha bits and bobs which I really like but I swear by DHB stuff too.

Assos is probably justified - I bought a winter jacket in 2007 and its great(the best I have had for almost a decade of cycling winters). I will be purchasing the Assos bibs for this summer. As an alternative I bought a good pair of Specialised Body Geometry shorts for long sportives and rides over the century last summer and they were really comfy but cost £90.

On somethings you have to really pay for what you get - I have 4 pairs of DHB bibs for winter training and ok for up to 60 miles but would not want to do much more than that as they are great for the price but obviously not going to be a good a a pair that cost 3 times as much.

  • Another vote for the Fieldsensor shorts from Endura....excellent kit.

Thanks folks - anyone have any experience of the Altura Airstream bibshorts? They look quite good and I know that Altura churn out some decent stuff.

Just to be clear - I have no doubt that the Assos and Rapha stuff is top quality and worth the money. Thing is - as I'm just about to take up cycling for the first time since I was 15 (which is a while ago now!), I'm going to be spending some serious dough in one go (as I need a bike, shoes, clothes, pumps etc etc). I don't want to spend out on something cheap but crap (as you'd know if you saw my intended kit list and recently increased credit card limit!) but if I can get away without spending £100+ on my first pair of shorts, that would be great!
  • Simple, Giordana Tenax. £50 from Ribble and rated by Cycling Weekly as best shorts money can buy, that includes Assos that they also tested. Come in a variety of colours and I can tell you from personal experience that they are superb.

From experience I'd second that opinion completely re. the Giordana Tenax bibshorts - and if anyone knows somewhere in the world I can get the white Tenax short sleeved jersey, I'd appreciate the info.

Endura FS260 are the business. I paid £60 quid for mine 2 years ago and they are still as good as new. You can get them from Chain Reaction for £35 these days. The only shorts I've had that are still comfortable after 50 miles.

I quite like Giordana stuff as well and the shorts get great reviews, but personally I think the contrasting stitching makes it look like your cycling in you're underpants.

These aren't bibs the the OP is looking for though. Going by the picture.

Evans often sell Pearl Izumi bibs off cheap - I have two pairs of ultra sensors and one 3D pro. All have served me very well and I would recommend for comfort, durability and build quality.

+1 for Castelli. The Free bib is so good I bought 2. Unfortunately they are not free, but rather expensive. Worth it though ime.

Assos is very justified! You get what you pay for and buying Assos is one of the best decisions in your bike gear buying 'career'.

Not for me it wasn't - the 2 items I have had have been of poor design and expensive. I won't say they make bad clothing as obviously many people have good opinions on their stuff but I think you need to be more selective in the clothing selection department rather than simply say 'Assos - I'll take it'.

    Hi,
Firstly sorry for the thread drift, I asked on the gear and knowhow forum about the material used in shorts and did not get much response but there seems to be a few different brands mentioned in this thread. Which of these bibs have a matt finish on them, as I do not fancy geting any shiny lycra gear.

Forget the 'all the gear, no idea" comments!

This is usually just stupid people who criticise excellent quality equipment ... (Shorts don't get much better than Assos ... ask anyone who has them!)... because it's expensive rather than because it's no good! :D (hehe ... wait for the responses).
