Hi people,

Ok I think ive bust one of my levers... brakes work fine, however the gears dont work atall (im talking about left gear, front gears here).

I opened it up a bit (tried), and I notice that the cable has came out from where it should be and has apparently pushed its way through the plastic??

This happened whilst fiddling with the 2 screws on my front gear because i was trying to stop the chain binding with the guides.

Now I cant get this cable to go back where it is meant to live, and even if I do that im not sure it will stay?

does anyone know where I can get a manual for these gears so I can learn more about them, or know where I can get replacement parts etc etc, anything that might be of help?

If I am not going to be able to fix this, I am interested in the Dura-Ace STI shifters, however I dot not know if these come with fitting instructions etc?

Any help / information apprecitated!

  • I think.... that when they go they go. My Tiagra shifters 'went' over the summer. All the cable got snagged and tangled inside the shifter itself. Pretty much every bike shop I spoke to reckoned they couldn't do anything with them. One guy reckoned it was sometimes possible to fix them... but he had a look at mine and passed a verdict of knackered...

The expense of replacing them on a reasonably cheapo bike was such that it wasn't really worth it unless I could get one of ebay... but even there all the ones I looked at ended up going for a pretty penny and most of them looked 'tired'. I ended up riding on 2 gears for a few months (it was my rear shifter that went) then got an entirely new bike on the cycle to work scheme. Converted the old one with the knackered shifter into a single speed....

    thanks for that,

I have actually ajusted the gear for now so that it is stuck in the high gear. Can be slightly tiring by top of the big hill in my area but I've done it many times in top gear... I'll just have to cope for now. I've seen some Shimano Dura-Ace STI shifters which look sweet, a little pricey but sweet. saying that the bike only cost £400 new, and i think they go for about 300 now... I'll see how I go lol.

Anyone know how hard it would be to fit a set of brand new shifters onto a bike?

Have you had a look at Shimano's technical pages?

    http://techdocs.shimano.com/techdocs/index.jsp

You'll find exploded views on there that may help you.

If you've already got STIs on the bike then putting new on shouldn't be too hard. Not sure if this is possible but you might get lucky and be able to use the handlebar clamps from the old STIs rather than having to retape your bars. Cable outer for brake and gear can be re-used.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

im not fussed about getting new ones, nor fitting them, and I dont mind replacing the tape.

I just dont fancy getting stuck whilst trying to set it up. Might be a while before i can get a new one through... no payday for another 2 weeks lol. I could dig into my savings but thats for the new bike.
  • Yet another reason why I prefer ergolevers... 'cause they're rebuildable. :P
