Choosing Rear Shocks?

Having established that the front bounce on my old Wolf Ridge is not too bad, can't say the same for the rear! Bobs like a yoyo and rebound is harsh. Is there more to matching a rear shock unit to a frame than just the eye-to-eye length? If so, what else determines what will "work"? Pivot points? Geometry?
And advice welcome! The frame itself seems fine (and I like the fit and the look) so I guess worth tinkering with the hardware?
