Optimum rest period?

After a minor crash (got doored by a chap jumping out of a taxi) I have been off the bike for a few days (while its repaired, I'm fine). Was wondering if there is any consensus of opinion on an optimum rest period from a daily commute (26 miles). I always find I have loads of energy on a monday following a weekend where I've avoided binge drinking (rare) and will have had just over a week off the bike by the time i get it back. Is there a period of time after which you start losing muscle tone and fitness rather than simply resting?
Cant wait to get it back, a few days of public transport reminds me part of the reason why I love bike commuting so much, quite apart from the novelty of riding over the sydney harbor bridge every day - incidentally, how do I change my profile details on here to relect my move down under from London...?
