Why do I even bother?

I am mad. Giving my bike a clean and stuff, took both wheels off, cleaned all gears drivetrain. No mud there anymore. Give brakes a quick clean, get mud out. Put both wheels in turn them and theres this metal rubbing on metal sound. I don't see why I even bother, this happens every time I try to do something to my bike. My nearest bike shop is 8 miles away, so that sucks. Am I just completly stupid. This happened the last time I took the front wheel off, but that time I just needed new brake pads. Replaced them, now its started again. Don't want to ride my bike now, incases I brake something. I am depressed. As I'm writing this I'm listening to Epiphany in Sweeny Todd, that shows how mad I am. This sort of stuff makes me just want to quit mtbing all togeter, it costs me money, I've run out of places to ride that I haven't a thousand times before. And then when the people at my school have the most expensive bikes and they don't ride them, that angers me. Thay should be riding Tesco bikes, not 24 sevens and all these fancy norcos. I am angered. Any help on the brake thing? Any quick ways to get money?(robbing banks is my best option so far) And so Ends this long nag. Goodbye and thank you.

  • Part of the fun in mountain biking is tinkering with your bike and figuring out what's wrong with it. First thing I'd check for is worn brake pads. Not a big job so you can save yourself an 8 mile trip!

also wet brake pads 'grind' on the rotor even if they're actually not in contact with it.
I said hit the brakes not the tree!!

mine do it all the time...i ve givn up hope of ever setting them properly...

just think as long as the wheel takes 10-15 secs to slow down you re probably not loosing any noticable time

buy a bmx. ride that for a year, then go back to your mtb. maybe a bit of time out will help you realise why you got into the sport.

  • Hey I know how you feel,
been riding for over 15 years and it seems every time I clean my bike there is another problem.
Just be happy in the knowledge that when your bike breaks out on the trail you'll know what to do straight away and won't have to call mummy to come and pick you up like all those rich kids with their flashy bikes....
If you're bored of all your trails I suggest a little street riding, just beware of the fuzz...
I'm sure that rattling will go away...

Sometimes if she's being a b*tch I just don't wash her for a week! Got two options then, either it works or everything goes wrong and then it can only be better after I've washed and fettled a bit.

If they are disc brakes you could slacken off the torx bolts that hold the caliper to the fork/frame then squeeze the brake lever to re-centre the caliper over the disc and re-tighten the torx bolts. That way the disc should be spinning through the centre of the caliper and not touching the pads.

If ithere is still noise then check the disc rotor isn't warped, and that the brake pads are seated back in the housing of the caliper when the brake isn't applied.

Expensive bikes aren't all that, if people don't use them then they obviously don't understand the value of money, especially kids (teens). They'll learn in time!

Just try and enjoy fettling, cleaning and riding your bike. If you've ridden all around the local area try going further away. Day trip to Wales, or up to the 7stanes on holiday, or join up with some others in your area. Chances are someone living quite close will ride completely different trails to you that you never knew where there!

    Stay positive!

  • Theres 2 things I hate and one of them is rich kids. I've been doing some street riding lately, me and my brother saw 2 policemen, then I say " Look out it's the fuzz!" And they come over and start asking what we're doin. I love saying fuzz.
    Thanks Again. 8)
