I have 1995 GT Timberline and while it’s in great condition it could do with a little TCL after a few recent winter rides. I have had the bike from new, I past my driving test with in 6 months of getting the bike and its had very little use until now. I have recently started riding again at weekends with a couple of friends and its starting to show its need for some maintenance. I have just found out me Mrs is away this coming weekend so I will have Saturday and Sunday to strip the bike in the kitchen without her ever knowing. Hahaha…
I have a few questions…so here goes…..
WilI I still be able to get head set bearings (not Ahead set, more like a BMX type) if so where from, do most LBS sock these older parts or not?
I have never regressed / replaced the wheel bearings, is it worth doing?
I have also never regressed / replaced the bottom bracket bearings, what is the special tool I need to take it out. I know Park tools is a good place to start reading, its just I am not sure if what I am reading is relevant to a 12yr old bike.
Indecently a new bike is on order so I intend to do a major overhaul and keep the GT for occasional use only.
Any other hints and tip for working on an older bike would be most welcome.

Prob loose or caged bearings for the headset, not a cartridge, available for just a few quid at most bike shops. I run a 96 DiaCompe Aheadset!
If the bearings feel ok in the BB and hubs, no play, and smooth when the axles are turned by finger, then just leave them be. If not, strip, examine, and take it from there. May need new bearings, or a new unit.
Apart from that just keep it well serviced, esp the cables.0 -
I think all the parts you intend to replace etc are still readily available as they are standard. Do the BB cups have splines in them? If so then a new BB will be a doddle to replace theough you'll need a special tool and an imperial 'Jussy' to hold it with. the only part you might ahve probs getting could be the rear brake if it is a U-Brake.I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0

Sound, thats good to hear, I am going to make some enquires and buy the stuff I think I am going to need prior to the weekend, don't want to strip it down and find out I can not get everything.
Gone pay a visit to LBS later on today after work, will let you know how I get on.0
