Brake trouble

I have got some brake-rub issues with my Avid Juicy Carbons.

I 'accidentally' squeezed the brake lever with no disc in - you know the rest.

I walked the pistons back in using a large flat blade screwdriver and they went back in o problem

However, since fitting original rotors (G2) with DT Swiss Center lock Adapters (now running XTR splined hubs) I have had nothing but problems - the brakes are in excellent working order but do you think it's because I am using the adapters? Alignment issues?

I have loosened the caliper bolts off and re-aligned the brakes, the pistons are fine, they don't need bleeding etc so I really am at a loose end.

I am seriously considering buying some XTR brakes with splined rotors because of this as I can't, no matter how hard I try get this combo to stop rubbing....

HELP!

:? :x

Are the pisotns operating at the same speed, and retracting fully?
  • Yep - this is what I can't understand SS.....

Disc not warped? Sometimes after re aligning, they need to bed back in. Is the rubbing excessive, noticably dragging?
  • Yep, if I lift the front wheel off the ground a spin the wheel by hand it goes about 2 revolutions and stops.

Obviously I have not ridden it whilst like this - but even my LBS were clueless......

They think it's mixing the rotor systems... ie Avid, splined hubs etc

But as I said to LBS - I know plenty of people that run this setup.

Discs are not warped - the wheels are brand new and true....

Sounds like something is moving after you set them up. The Avid tri align system can slip sometimes on the bevelled washers.

use the adjuster and back the pads off. and then just use till bedded in. then tweak.

  • Cheerslads Ill give it a go - or maybe take it to a different bike shop and see if they can sort it

That's if I can't get it to work....

After SS's and Nicklouses post I realised that someone (and not me before you all jump to conclusions  ) had wound the pad adjust button all the way in....

Could only be my LBS as I don't normally fettle with that as it was set up nice the way it was....

NOW to find the offending culprit (unless it was the nephew - he's 10!)

    JOB DONE! :D

avid juicy carbons don't have a pad adjuster - does the bite point thingum actually move the pads?!

They do... it's the little hidden allen key on top of the reservoir markied "->in". It moves the pistons in and out. From memory, in moves them in towards the caliper (away from the disk) which seemed counter-intuitive to me.
