Rim width is measured in mm, XC bikes usually have 17 or 19 mm rims. With modern wheels and tyres, you can get away with a tyre 3.5 times rim width, or 58mm on a 17mm rim which is nigh on 2.3 in.
However, your frame is likely to be the limiting factor, you need to keep at least a half inch has between tyre and stays. Any less and you'll be grinding away the frame (especially if it's muddy) as the tyre deflects under load.
Why put wide tyres on for commuting though? Narrow high pressure tyres are best for roads.0 -
Cheers S_J_P,
they are free thats basically why I am going to fit them and if they are not any good I will fork out for some skimopy sexy things.
There are basically two factors 1) I am too tight and 2) expecting my second little one, so its the only way my missus will let me have anything new/second hand.
Many Thanks for the advice.0 -
If they don't fit, specialized fatboys, £15 each and really good. Fast rolling, and PR as well.0
