XC with occasional bit of rough - less than £700

I'm going to join the lads from the pub in a bit of light xc riding now the light's coming back to the evenings.. I was all set on buying a GT Avalanche expert. but a few of them are a bit more serious than me and have upgraded to Fully suspended bikes. They occasdionally go off to places like Coed Llandegla Forest and i would like to join them once in a while, so i was quite keen on having a bit of luxury up the back end so to speak. I'm just looking for people's thoughts on this.
I was quite tempted by a few 06 and 07 bikes such as http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=17824
and was just wondering of there's any major downfall on buying an older bike to allow my budget to stretch to fs? I relaise a Hardtail will get me better components but i'm no pro by any means.
I would really like to be able to go and see some of the bikes, but not many people seem to stock the cheap end of the big name FSers.
ANy advice appreciated.
Cheers
Andy

Personally I'd get a hardtail, as you say the spec levels are better & the bikes should be lighter.
The Full Suss GT in your link isn't too bad, but will be quite heavy & has fairly low end components on it, plus you can't test ride it. Some folks love the I-Drive system, some hate it.
Most big brand full sussers start around £1000, and are equivalent in spec to a £500 hardtail, and they usually weigh a little bit more than a £500 hardtail too.0 -
As above, go for a Hardtail. Nothing you cant do at Llandegla with a Hardtail.
Get used to cycling and learning to control it off road, then maybe think about upgrading to a Full Suspension in a year or two0 -
Wow.. Thanks for the speedy responses guys.!. any suggestions apart from the GT Avalanche Expert? I can baffle myself all day looking in brochures and trying to compare specs... but this one looked quite good http://www.wiggle.co.uk/ProductDetail.a ... id=Frogoog and i know that a few of the bike shops near here have it in stock so i can go and look at it.
What are it's competitors from the likes of specialized and scott etc?

As you don't mind older models, have a browse around
http://www.paulscycles.co.uk/
If happen to be in your size, some full bouncers offer pretty good vfm IMO e.g. an '05 Trance with 600 quid off!
No connection - other than as a satisfied customer a couple of times!d.j.

That Idrive is superb value - and suprisingly light, at 30lbs (at least for a full susser of this price), and pedals like no other full susser. Not sure I'd get it though... some great hardtails out there.0

Does anyone stock focus bikes.. that i can actually go and sit on ? I really want to have a try on one. I'm 6"1' but have quite short legs (comparitively) so i really want to try and find something i can test for size first :-)0 -
Just wiggle - though they do a scheme where you can try before you buy via post.0

Just found out i can get a bike through the cycle2work scheme via halfords and my employer (NHS). Had a quick google around and it seems that Halfords will happily source a bike from another supplier for me .. good news! Works out around 35% off!0

I've read some people have had Halfords order via wiggle.. so what's the opinions on this?
