the gp4000s are grippy in the wet and dry even when cornering fast. They are hard wearing and roll fast - perfect :)

I enjoyed the grip on offer from both the GP4000 and GP4000S (in all conditions) but I found they cut up quite easily. No punctures but the treads looked they were into self-harming.
I could've just been unlucky but this was last summer when the roads were in pretty good nick. :?

    Now on Fortezza Tricomps.

I'm using the GP4000S at the minute and think they're great. I've seen many reviews saying tha they cut or puncture easily but I've had no problems whatsoever with them.

Used Pro Race 2's for a couple of years but found that they did not grip at all well in the wet or on greasy roads - very unnerving.

Might try Schwalbe Ultremos next - anyone used them?

Forget both and get some Vredestein Fortezza Tricomps. Better than both the above and cheaper too.

I have only bad experiences with Conti's, cutting and puncturing, rubber is too thin or soft.

Interesting, i had those for a year or so and i found them less sure footed and less reasuring in the wet and the GP 4000 that i have at the mo seem a bit faster too.

so far then it looks like a minor upgrade to the GP 4000S

Nothing beats ProRace 2s, in all weathers I have found them excellent.

The trouble with these polls is that they are almost entirely subjective. There are quite fun to take part in but I'm not sure how useful they are in the practical sense. For every 10 people who like a certain make of tyre, you will find an equal number who don't. I suppose the proof of this is the fact that there are many different tyre manufacturers who all seem to make a profit from their individual wares. It's a bit like asking whether Shimano or Campag is best - but please let's not get into that! :?

Edit: I forgot to say that I prefer the Pro race!

ProRace for me - they are supposed to be bringing out a version3 soon.

it's a hard life if you don't weaken.
  • I'm sure Cyclingfury is right - it seems to make sense. However, this thread has come at a good time for me. I was just wondering which tyres to buy and as a result of the comments here have decided to go for the Fortezza Tricomps. If they don't prove satisfactory I will probably then go for the Pro 2s. hers hoping for a good result first time around.

I've used both Conti GPs and Michelin ProRace and didn't find them at all confidence inspiring on fast descents. Fortezzas have come as a revelation.
I'm only concerned with looking concerned

+1 for Fortezzas. I had them on my race bike last year and got an amazing (for me) 6000km out of the rear. Fast and grippy as well.

I'd take Conti GP4000s over ProRace 2 because I think they grip better. I require confidence from my tyres.

  • Well, i went for the contis in the end (they were ahead in the poll at that point) which seams to have subconciously motivated a bunch of michelin fans - oh well, never mind, they seem to divide opinion pretty evenly so there's probably not much in it anyway.

I've not had any problems with my GP4000s (or any conti tyres I use). I used contis exclusively until my latest bike build when, after hearing loads horror stories about contis, I decided to try the Pro Race 2s. If I don't get along with them, although I seem to get on with most stuff of the cycling world, I'll try the Conti Attack/Force combo.
