What bike for a 13-year old?

I need some advice please on what bike to buy my 13-year old son. I would like to start taking him with me on fairly challenging cross country routes, so the bike can't be something that will fall apart.
But he's still growing - he's about 5'7" tall and say 60kgs - he will probably end up being at least 6' and 75-odd kgs, and I don't want to spend a fortune and he grows out of it really quickly. I suppose therefore it should have good resale value.
Any clever ideas?

Choose a ****ing big television. Choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players, and electrical tin can openers. Choose a bike. Choose some singletrack. Choose your future. Choose Life. (Irv Welsh)

Whats the budget?
Maybe look at the Carrera Vulcan or similar in Halfords,or see if you can pick up a good second hand bike.
Or look at sale bikes at www,paulscyles.co.uk.More likely to get a good deal,on something in a smalller size too.
Addiktion,in St Albans sometimes have some reasonable trade ins, though you have to be a bit lucky..2006 Giant XTC

I suppose the budget will need to be in the region of 4 to 5 hundred to get something decent. Thanks for the link to Pauls - I haven't heard of them before.http://www.youtube.com/user/stumpy25lbs
