Ah, I didn't think you literally meant 5000 miles apart there, I was going to argue how they were actually quite similar.

One thing is that bikes today are more versatile than ever... Like my hardtail, tough and 5 inches of travel, a very capable trail-centre bike, able to do some jumping, some pretty big drops, yet still light enough and agile enough to race XC if the urge took me. Not so long ago you'd want 2 bikes or more to do that- your short travel lightweight race bike, maybe a tough hardtail for everyday rougher riding, and your full suss for the bigger stuff.

Likewise, if you get a 5 inch bouncer, the weight penalty's fallen enough that there's not much you can't do with it- they're no longer too heavy for distance or XC- and the strength and performance is so good now that you can ride them down downhill courses. So, again one bike does a job that would have been done by 2 or 3 in the past.

    2 bikes

Stumpjumper 08 HT and a late 90s GT Karakoram which I've set up as a single speed with slicks. Like right now. Won't get a chance to try riding it till Sunday though.

Have plans for a third bike, some type of 140 travel AM bike, maybe Tracer VP or BLT but I've got some testing to do.
