Rear wheel Shimano 600 hub problem

Hi I have a rear wheel problem with a NOS Shimano 600 hub. It moves up and down on the axle it seems loose. I have never ridden this set of wheels they are a spare set from many years back.

Does anybody know what could be wrong?

    I should think the cup and cone bearings need to be adjusted. You'll need special cone adjusting spanners which are very slim. I have mine for years but I shouldn't think they're expensive. Once you've got them they'll last forever for a home mechanic.
