With different widths of handlebars and both shallow and deep drops how so I know what size to get for my steed. Is there a measurement such that the width of the handlebars should be the width of your shoulders, etc?

Yes, width of your shoulders is a way to figure it. For me it depends whether you are a criterium racer of not. If you are then narrower bars are useful in making you a bit more aero and you can get through tighter race situations where a wider bar might seem to
make you a bit more nervous about shooting through a small rider gap. Me, I don't race
anymore. I use a fairly wide bar because it makes me feel a bit more opened up and
not "cramped" on the bike. And I don't care about aero.

Commonly expressed just as you say! But mine seem to measure 42cm and I am pretty slight of build! I'd have thought that big folk would measure significantly more than any (drop) bars available off-the-shelf (normally 44 seems to be about the max).
