I am looking for a road wheel test. Does anyone know when the Cycling weekly test was, and where I can get back copies?

    The last tests that I can find are C+ 168 March 2005 & C+184 June 2006 -
    On the basis of these dates they are probably overdue for a new wheel test, especially as there are now such a range of new factory built wheels.
    I am currently looking for new wheels myself & having a real headache deciding on what wheelset to purchase. (I am looking predominately for lightweight climbing wheels that can also be used for sportiffe rides etc)
    Just to give a flavour of the dillema here is a selection (not totally comprehensive) of factory built wheels that will fit Shimano cassettes. They are mostly in the 1400gr+ to 1500gr weight & range in price from approx £300 to £500.

    Easton Tempest II, Easton EA90SL, Easton EA90SLX, Easton Orion II, Easton Ascent II,
    Roval Fusee SL08, Ritchey Protocol Ltd, Fulcrum Racing 1, Mavic Ksyrium ES, Mavic Ksrium SL, DT Swiss 1450, Dt Swiss 1450 Mon Chasseral, Bontrager Race X Lite, Shimano Ultegra 6600, Shimano Dura Ace 7800 & 7801.

    The most difficult thing is to get a handle on the durability - ride quality - availability of spares - cost of spares (some spokes are listed at £4.50 each!) -ease of maintenance - etc. With those thoughts one might think that a pair of handbuilt custom wheels might be better but they are unable to match the weight of the latest factory built wheels.

    The spoke count on many factory built wheels does seem remarkably low despite the latest materials, spoke types & lacing patterns being used, ie offset rim drilling, non "J" bend spokes etc.
    Another fact that is difficult to ascertain is the rim weight, this will have a dramatic effect on the way the wheel feels & performs. Although many manufacturers appear to have wheels of similar weights one suspects that in some cases the weight saving is being made in the hub. The rim profile will also have an effect on the way the wheel performs ie aero or lower profile rim section.
