ive tightned everything possible, even down to my cleats!..noise still there...feels like the crank arm is loose and jumps a little on heavy strokes, feels like its moving,,,,,any advice?
ive tightened the arms until red in the face
  • I had just the same on my bike. It was driving me mad. Think it might have finally gone now-fingers crossed. I have done one short ride and no unusual sounds so far. I took the bike to the local LBS and had the BB greased and where the various cables leave their outer sheaths and meet the frame fittings. I also had the head set checked and adjusted. Hope this is of help.

Might be worth making sure you have no loose spokes too. I had a noise coming from my bike when pedalling for a good few weeks which persisted despite my best efforts greasing, tightening etc. Spent a few hours on google researching "bike noises" and eventually came across someone who seemed to have the same problem as me. The noise only started when pedalling and they'd been through everything too. They played around with their bike and managed to recreate the noise whilst freewheeling when zig-zagging (safely, of course :D ) across the road. Turns out it was a loose spoke. Tried some sharp turns on my bike and bingo - the noise started. Took the bike to my LBS who tensioned the spokes - it now runs as quiet as a church mouse! 8)

I think it's about time you got another bike, you've had that Bianchi for weeks now.

How old are the crank arms? My Thorn equipped with Centaur cranks developed a similar squeak (with a 9 month old crankset) and it was where the crank ends had "given" slightly. Ended up having to fit a triple BB (115mm) so that I could really lean into the cranks when doing them up (this put the chainrings too near the rear stays causing them to rub, hence the use of a wider BB).

Have you tightened the cranks to their fullest extent?

    Hope this helps,

bike approx 3yr old, bought second hand but guy hardly used it.....red in the face tryin to tighten, hands red with the effort!go out on test run for 5mins and put pressure on,when i get back the crank when again feels as though its come loose slightly...driving me mad...think need to visit lbs?
  • Stupid question, but have you actually taken the BB out, re-greased the threads on the BB cups, and tightened it back up again? You only mention the crank-BB interface.

havent taken the bb out...removed chainset and greased...but not taken the bracket out....this a possibilty for the movement/creak??
  • Yes of course! (Cheap old BBs with internal BBs are notorious for making creaking noises...)

You can get all sorts of crap inside a BB shell. Water... rust... metal shavings...

You might as well buy the required tool now, pull it out and see what's going on. And remember, RHS BB cup has a left-hand thread. LHS BB cup has a normal thread. I.e. oppposite to the pedals.

thanks...advice on left hand or right hand thread identification?
  • Maybe I should have wrote: right hand side BB cup has a left-hand thread. left hand side BB cup has a normal thread.

    "slightly old look pedals"
If you haven't sorted this yet, I'd look at your looks
    They are notorious for creeking
the delta cleat was modified wth nylon sections where they contact the peddle, however my experience is that after a while this wares, and they start to creek. Try some new cleats or my solution is a very small dab of grease at the front point of the cleat, (over the white nylon section)
