Monday Morning 8:30ish, coming down the hill in Greenwich Park there was a young Copper loitering with intent about halfway down seeming to be taking an interest in the bikes coming down the hill.

Tuesday morning he was at the top of the hill, still taking an interest.

I missed him on Wednesday as I came through later.

This morning there were three of them, halfway down, again loitering by the trees, one of them was busily using a hand held laser speed gun.

Any one know what they're up to or fallen foul of them, my PB down there is just short of 39mph. :D

mibees they are recruiting for the olympic games!
Whenever I see an adult on a bicycle, I believe in the future of the human race.

I hope and think they're there to stop motorists speeding judging by the sea of brake lights I saw going down there this morning in particular. They did not seem too bothered by the fact that I was overtaking the stream of cars. No idea how fast I was going though - no computer - did have one on a hybrid I was riding last year and it was easy to see 36mph on that...
  • Yep saw those 3 this morning (standing dangerously close to the cycle lane that runs down the hill paralel to the road - very few cyclists use it cos its dangerous!). They've been around Greenwich Park since last Summer (I think they live in the bushes) .They get loads of abuse (verbal) when they hang around the Maze Hill gate pointing out that 'cyclists dismount' (for 22 yards ?!)

  • Why does it take three of them to hold a radar gun? I've never actually seen them pull anyone over, but then I guess they've got a car covertly located ready to pull up speeding cars once they exit the park.

I doubt they take an interest in cyclists, but I always drop the speed just in case

What you've got to watch out for is making a left turn into Nevada St (one-yay). They often sit down the end of there pulling over cyclist. I got a ticket there a few months ago despite arguing that it's safer going that way than through the traffic in Greenwich AND that it's a cycle route if you plan your route with the TFL cycle route planner.
  • Not forgeting the poor soul that was killed cycling UP the hill last June (?) - I think the car drivers' in court this month ...

  • I used to get a chill down my spine everytime I rode up the hill and saw the ghostly white bike.

Was it a hit and run? Regardless, I hope they throw the book at the driver.

I'm sure there were about 5 of them in a little cluster at the main gate from Blackheath earlier this week. I've also seen them several times over the last few months. Once one was waiting at the bottom of the hill... as I came down the hill he dived into the road shouting "slow down!". Didn't pull me over though.

Talking of Greenwich, I wish they'd do something about the lifts at the tunnel. At least twice a week I seem to find that one or the other is closed. They have that plaque saying that the original lifts were in service for almost 90 years before being replaced... the current lifts have been there barely 15 years and break down constantly. I think Greenwich council should ask for a refund.

Why not take advantage of the fact you're on a bike and just stop and ask them?

    Cyclist Killed in Greenwich Park
The tragic death of a cyclist on June 26 in Greenwich Park has revived a debate about motorised traffic and speed limits in the royal park.

The victim was a 53-year-old man riding up The Avenue towards Blackheath, struck head-on by a car coming down the hill. The Metropolitan Police who are now also responsible for policing in the royal parks said on July 16 that the investigation was continuing, witness statements were still being taken, forensic evidence examined, and that the car driver had not been arrested nor had any charge been made at this stage. The inquest has been set for January 22, 2008, at Southwark Coroner's Court.
