Hi

Doing the TPT from Southport to Hornsea in June for charity.

Gonna do it on my MTB, so am looking to find out what would be the best 26" tyres to fit for this type of route.

Your recommendations would be appreciated.
Had a quick look on web and seen:-
Spesh Xroads, Conti Travel Contact, Schwalbe Hurricane, Schwalbe Marathon XR, amongst others.

Believe most of the TPT is on good surface, with only a few sections a bit rougher, so gonna need a nice rolling tyre but with a bit of grip on the sides for when the going gets rougher.

Cheers

  • Believe most of the TPT is on good surface,
dont believe a word, tried to follow that trail oct2006 its not good lots of muddy poorly drained surfaces.also lots of awkward narrow gates to negotiate, especially with panniers on.signing is poor also.read that they spent 60 million on this trail.its or was a disgrace.after about a third of the route i reverted to the road much better.sorry about that but its the truth
  • You have probably chosen a good list in your post. The only reallly rough bit is just after Longenden head after the tunnel but I had four panniers and had to push anyway.
The biggest problen I had was trail sink because it was wet. The bit around Lymm and Altringham were sapping as my tyres sank in about an inch.
Put full mudguards on if its going to be wet or you will get soaked in grite.
Sport Contact 1.6" work well and roll fantastically on the tarmac sections.

Did this as far as Doncaster in July (abandoned as Toll Bar and Doncaster were in a bad way due to flooding)

managed on a recumbent with Marathon Plus tyres - not much need for anything more specialised than that

  • I did the TPT a couple of years ago with a friend, we cycled Liverpool - Sheffield in a day on heavy/cheap mountian bikes.

It rained just before the Longdedale Trail and the grit was like a thick smoothie, I had no front mud guard and it chewed up my gears. I'd suggest fairly thin tyres with a bit of tread.

Make sure you have decent map of most of the route - especially around sotckport and south manchester area - it can get complicated in places and is poorly signed too. The Sustrans map is really poorly detailed.
  • Cheers everyone for the replies. Looks as though this route could do with some of Sustrans £50M spent on it !
