Looking for a bit of help. Having a ‘discussion’ with a guy at work, who won’t have it that theres no specific offence of ‘speeding’ related to bikes.

Told him about the ‘pedalling furiously’ thing – won’t have it.

Told him, ‘find me ONE successful prosecution, and I’ll admit you’re right’

Anyone else got any more evidence I can throw at him (Note: bricks aren’t evidence, although they have been considered)

I think you will find ‘speeding’ relates to mechanically propelled vehicles/bicycles - clearly a cycle does not fit into this category, however irresponsible cycling is another matter…………

Also, has a link which ended me up at this, which I've been trying to find for ages. It's the special law that means its illegal to exceed the posted limit on a cycle (or any vehicle), on the park road in Richmond park.

    Law 28.

    http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si1997/19971639.htm

Limits on normal roads apply to motorised vehicles only.

Its just getting the evidence together.....

Ta, your previous link led me eventually to this:

"On the other hand, you cannot be charged with speeding on a bike. There is
no such offence. (This on the authority of His Honour Patrick Halnan, no
less, in a letter to The Times in Nov 1997.) You can be done for cycling
"dangerously", "carelessly and inconsiderately" or "furiously"; but if
you're safe, careful and considerate, there's nothing to stop you zonking
    along at 45 in a 30 limit."

Well, yes, but it is impossible to be safe hurtling along at 45mph on a pushbike IMO. If something happens you're going down, and possibly taking somebody else with you.

Good.... been trying to set the speed camera off for ages, but cars keep getting in the way ! Plus there probably isn't enough material to set it off !

I've been riding around with my postal address taped to my back with the words 'Please post photo's to this address', in the hope that would set a camera off. It hasn't happened yet, but I must be getting close!!!
    It's all good.

Not that any of us obey that limit though. surprisingly a lot of cars do so it's always fun overtaking them and frustrating getting stuck behind them! I wish they'd bad cars in the park anyway!

So for those of you riding thro the park - have you known people get fined for cycle speeding? Who imposes the penalties, Police? Do they use electronic speed detection or just stop you and assert you were speeding?
  • I dont think theres a specific drinkcycling law either - probably get done for 'recklessness'

    Yep, not funny.

I heard that over the last 'X' No of years, this was one of 2 'deaths by cyclist'.

Add that to the reported facts that the guy had learning difficulties and it wasn't even his bike, he'd borrowed it from his nephew.....

I didnt realise he had learning difficulties I knew it wasnt his bike.

I do think of it every time I see cyclists hop onto the pavement to get through traffic faster. Dont have to squish someone like a car does to kill them :(
  • Passed a speed camera in a 30 mph zone at 40 mph on Sunday. Going down a gentle slope of course and failed to set the camera off. I'm obviously not big enough to register :(
