Firstly, if there is another topic thats already been done, please feel free to merge. Couldn't see anything when I checked but then I didn't check 104 pages!

I'm new to MTBing but used to like my finish line waxxy lube in my roady days. ATM I'm using white lightening which I understand to be the staple. What are its drawbacks and advantages?

Also, what do you use and what makes it a good lube to be using?

TBH you are there already. Posibly look at the finish line wet and dry chain lubes. one for the wet and yes you got it.

another thing to look at is a good means of cleaning the chain as it has a much harder job to do.

a lot of people use a sram powerlink to enable easy regular chain removal for cleaning.

  • Yup, got the powerlink connector. One of the drawbacks of living in Norfolk is it's the graveyard of mountain biking so about every 250/200 miles I strip my drive train off (jockey wheels, chain rings 'n' all) and clean it with industrial strength deep penetrating de-greaser. I'm v anal!

Oki-koke, I also spray GT85 like an essex blonde uses cheap hair spray (will taht get censored on this forum???), but which first - is it GT85 then lube or t'other way around?

gt first as it is a good water displacer.

  • get on your bikes and ride!
  • yer I use the purple grease on my bearings. if the chain lube is as good as the bearing lube then it's good stuff too, however the purple goes EVERYWHERE!

  • using the purple extreme lube myself and it is very good, seems to last an age and never ever makes a sound, drivetrain doesn't collect clag so all around a good one, tbh any lube used regularly will do the trick however the key word is regularly. apparanly the purple stuff was developed for off shore drilling applications so lasts in the wet!!
  • i'm in norfolk too - whereabouts are you?

  • ive recently been using the finishline wet lube as my dry lube ran out and the lbs didnt have any due to the factory buring down?????? the dry lube i liked very much, but the wet lube is the foaming one andd is a bit strange at first, also does allow the dust etc from the trails to cling to the drive train a lot more but it does do a good job!

    If you lube your chain before a ride then return home covered in mud do you;

Wash your bike and chain etc. and then degrease/regrease the chain?

Just wash your bike and GT85 the chain leaving the original lube in place?

Hose down the bike and chain and thats it?

  • personally wash bike and chain with an all purpose cleaner degreaser (like muc of) then with a tesco alloy wheel brush soaked in all purpose cleaner scrub cassette, chain and chain rings, then hose off, dry then re lube,
but i am a little anal about keeping the bike running gear all clean and ready for the next ride!

Similar to the above. I tend to use a little degreaser after a muddy run and scrub the chain and cassettes. Then clean off with water, then Fenwicks all over. Finished with Bike spray then relube. Every now and then (about 2-3 weeks) I take the chain off and give it a good soak in chain cleaner.
