helmet saved my life today at worst at best a trip to A + E to get my melon put back together.

had aborted the trip i was on as it was too muddy and was heading home. innocuous looking concrete bend leading to a subway underpass on a quite steep hill, was going quite fast but nowt too mental.

front wheel went from under me and i came down on the right hand side of my body smashing the back of my head off the floor, usual sky floor sky floor type tumbling to a halt.

helmet broke and split at the back, brand new altura jacket and gloves ruined and my arms, hands and legs ragged about a bit but happy not to have come off worse that that.managed to ride home and have only just started to feel the aches and pains from my elbow and leg.adrenaline eh? :D

on the net tonight to buy another helmet so i can go out saturday, hopefully stay on this time but ive seen lads out without helmets and tragedy can strike anytime so get your lid on!! helmets are for winners.

oh bike was ok only the pedal and bar end took a battering, camelbak intact as well to my surprise.

  • Holy cr*p.
To think that I go out very occasionally with out my helmet.
It’s stupid really I would never use my chainsaw with out all the correct safety stuff.
Glad to hear nothing too serious happened to you or your bike.

Good to here your ok Ramon, I've still got a scar on my left thumb from using an unguarded stapler without gloves. Seriously though it's amazing how complacent we get with safety stuff..
that is untill it all goes wrong.
  • Glad to hear your ok mate would never go out without mine just coz im a clumsy sod
    Sonic.....that was poor  .

Oh yeah forgot about that! Blood tests showed up glandular fever - the Prof reckons Ive had it on/off for many years, and it keeps activating, causing the M.E. So for the time being, gotta play it cool and careful! Overdoing it can make it 10x worse.
  • Never realised glandular fever could do that every day's a school day i suppose. Isn't that the kissing fever? Sonic you lil tiger
Anyway wear your lids kids!!! 8)

Ha, yeah, must have infected half of Chapeltown by now! Chronic EBV (Epstein Barr) can be pretty nasty. Good thing is that the adrenal tumour I was diagnosed with doesnt seem to be a problem - I had two cancelled surgeries but scvans show its tiny and benign, if their at all (and hormone output has normalised)

Sorry to threadjack but Sonic I thought you could only get glandular fever once? I'm only asking as I know you've been ill for sometime and I had glandular fever 5 years ago. It put me in hospital for a week and a half on drips and things and I was told you could only get once and you may feel a bit lathargic afterwards (worst case perhaps a couple of years). But after 5 years I still get the completly wiped out feeling every now and again and had just put this down to fitness/tiredness.
  • Good news from the scan then nice one :) You'll soon be eatin jam butties and pumpin iron in the gym matey 8)

The Prof said it lies dormant after infection, but can reactivate periodically - it stays in the white blood cells, so yes, you only get it once as a matter of speaking, but it can reawaken. Its closely linked with ME and CFS. Some good sources on the net.

Yeah, wipes you out all right! Could be that for you, or might just be bad flu or something - worth getting it checked out though.

    Cheers Scott!
