Gear problem

Hi,
Question about gears - will try to describe it properly:) When I'm changing the gear "up" there is a awful delay before chain goes "up". What could be a solution? Is it a simple matter of adjusting gears or shall I go to the bike repair man?
The model: Shimano Alivio Rapidfire 8-speed gear shifter (one of).
Thanks!
Daniel

Should be able to adjust yourself.

Youtube is also a good source for information. Easier to understand with a video.0 -

Turn rear adjuster anti clock, to push mech towards wheel ....just half a turn at a time.0

tis a cable tension problem
as cables get older under tension they stretch to be a little longer
this affects the shifting on sti shifters

I've had my new road bike just under 3 weeks now and I've done about 150 miles. I think I need to adjust the gears as it isn't perfect like it used to be.
It's normal for a brand new bike to need adjusting after a while isn't it???_______________________

Yes it's normal, it's also normal for the bike shop to offer a free first service to sort these things out onece your bike has had a chance to bed in a little, so take it back to the shop and get them to explain the adjustments while they do them, they will probably be happy to do so.0

I second this (but draw the line at stroking his shifter!)
On the current Alivio shifters, there is an adjuster coming out of the shifter that will increase the tension enough to solve this problem. Adjust a bit, test, adjust a bit more, test, etc. Make sure you adjust the gear cable tension, not the brake cable adjuster!0 -

my bike is female, so hugging and stroking it is fine.

Thanks for replying. I thought they needed adjusting after a while. I bought a planet-x road bike through the halfords cycle2work scheme so I'm not taking it back there
I used to service my mtb, I'll just be careful!!_______________________
