Factory built wheels- Shimano or Bontrager?

After either a new front wheel or pair. I'd prefer to go factory built.

I currently have a Bontrager Race Lite rear wheel which I like a lot, so was thinking about just buying a front Select. This'd be about £40 from work.

If I go for Shimano, it'd be either R500s or R550s and I'd flog my rear Bonty wheel. It does of course depend if these are better wheels than the bontys- I run XT tubeless wheels on my mountain bike and like them. I love Shimano hubs.

They're for winter road and cyclocross use. Are there any alternatives? Price for a pair would be up to £90/100, but I'd rather spend less.

Cheers.

I'm not sure re cyclocross use, however, for Road use, I run on a pair of Shimano R550's - perfectly good basic road wheel - very pleased with them for the price - reasonably light-weght at 1840g per pair approx. Obviously there are better Road training wheels out there, but for the price they're pretty competent on the Road.

TBH at this level of wheel they wont differ performance wise too much...

these are simple entry level wheels & as long as they are round they will do teh job intended..

both are strong neither is light or aero ..

WHR550's seem to have a better reputation than WHR500's, both have easily-serviced cup&cone bearings, 550's have less spokes and they're bladed rather than round
Ribble easily had the best prices last time I looked, but now they've gone up again - currently £54 for 500's, £81 for 550's

    Disagree that they're not aero...

For the money, they're doing very well...
