I am in a process of buying a bike but would like to find out which are the better (overall) brakes out of:

Hayes Hfx-9 Hd Disc Brake with V8 Rotor

and the:

Avid Juicy 3

This is a big factor for me in deciding on the bike.

Cheers

both are a bit poor but i would have to say the Hayes even if they are either on or off in action. The juicy 3's just dont really match up to the 5's or the 7's.

    what are the bikes?

the juicy 3 is a low end brake but perfectly good

Hayes 9 HD does not get very good reviews even though its twice the cost of a juicy 3
  • Well its a choice between Iron Horse Yakuza 2007 model and Iron Horse Yakuza 2008 - there is a difference of £500 between the two models (2007 being cheaper) - and Im stemming towards that one. Saying that the 2007 model is the one with the Hayes breaks - what are the common faults with these breaks?

    cheers

Ok - point taken about the hayes - but what aspect of this particular model gets the negative vote?Is it the levers for example?

    cheers

I have Juicy 5's & believe they have the same performance as the 3's.

In fact I only got the 5's cos the 3's were out of stock. They work well but squeal like crazy in the wet...

Ok - thanks - although this leaves me in a sticky situation - out of the following spec - which would you opt for???:

The best breaks? I go for a weekend in Paris.

The best brakes? I'd go for the Avids.
I'm only concerned with looking concerned

I'd make sure you're happy with the rest of the spec, then get the cheaper bike.

£500 gets you a lot of brake upgrade and/or other bits.

I agree - I think the rest of the spec is worth the money and I can always upgrade the brakes at a later date.

Thanks for the advice - because overall the 2007 iron Horse Yakuza is a better buy - it also means that the Hayes comes with it - but in time to come I will be upgrading them. SO thanks for the warning :)

no problem, and with £500 to spare you'd be able to upgrade to avid juicy 7's :D

I have an HFX 9 I do agree with the people who say it is on/off feeling, but to be fair they are really powerful for a simple brake.

I've had hayes nines on two bikes now and put them on my orange five with no problems!

I don't get why people slate them constantly!

As for a bit on/off ,try bleeding your brakes! (not that i had any problems with modulation before)

I've tried avid 5's and 7's and found them crap - get formula k24 or megas if you've got the cash!

Merlin have the K18s for 129, have them myself and can't recommend them enough. they also have soem good deals on other brands
  • www.kompressor-bike.com - K24s €251 with 180mm rotors. I've ordered a set.
  • Like others have suggested, I'd go for the '07 bike too. I just bought a 2007 Norco Six 2 to replace my cross country bike with something more fun. That came with Juicy 3's. I upgraded to Avid Code's which I got mega cheap on eBay from the states.

£500 would allow you to do quite a bit of upgrading, especially if you don't ride the existing components and sell them on as new on eBay.

do you do anything to yours ? :)

This happened a couple of times after going for really wet rides and leaving the bike alone for a week.
A guy at my lbs told me to push the pistons back after wet rides, easy!
What happens is the piston bit corrodes, wont go back in and gets worse and worse until its shagged!
Most lbs should be able to service them... for a price!

Try this - but dont quote me on it...

    Take the pads out,
spray a load of disc brake-cleaner in there,
    leave it for a bit,
    wipe the excess,
    put the pads back-in
gently push the piston pads back with a suitable impliment (spanner, handle of a kitchen knife...)
put the wheel back on and do up the q.r.
pull the leaver and repeat until it frees up.

Basically jack the pistons in and out until it it stops sticking.

I tried gt85 instead of brake-cleaner once or twice - BUT DO NOT get it on any pads/discs/braking surfaces! And wipe any excess off.

Go to CRC i got them for £106 200mm front rotor, 180mm rear.

    Hopefully will come tomorrow :D
  • I think I'm too late but for what its worth mabys worth giving the new Stroker Trail a try, they seem to be picking up a bit of attention from MTB press although that doesnt always mean much.

Don't touch the Ryde version as they are meant to be a whole different ball game - ie crap.

  • Just resurrecting this topic... i'm looking for new brakes as well.

Brugles - how did you get on with the Avid Codes?
    Ash1984 - Hayes Stroker?

I know ur bound to say they're good but good points/bad points?
