OK - the 4 is lighter than the 1 but its nearly £200 more for not that different a spec.

Anybody have a view on whether its worth splashing out more? There doesnt appear to be any reason to me other than £200 to save 2 pounds in weight (which I probably would do!). Im nowehere near the shop so cannot visit to check them out.

Ive checked the other Merlin threads but Ive not got my answer

Cheers

and this bike is just stunning (in my eyes :D )and many others as ive put posts on site

MALT 4 frame a good pound lighter than the MALT 1
  • Malt 2 is made of double butted Aluminium, wheras the Malt 4 is a hydroformed frame, i.e tubes are formed using liquid under pressure. better in my opinion. hence dearer.

I'm sure the Malt 4 is worth the extra spend.

But the Malt 1 is also a very well-specced bike for the cash. It depends on your needs/preferences.

Perhaps the Malt 2 is an option if you're torn between the other two?
  • Thanks for the replies. The Merlin is going to be a second bike. Having gone full suss a while back I miss the hardtail on the quicker rides and I want a good bike at a nice price. The Merlins fit the bill for me.

Im not keen on the colour of the 2 but I think the 4 is shading it. The extra wonga will be worth it in the long run I am sure. I emailed Merlin and they gave weights of around 25 lbs for the 4 around 27lbs. You do notice the difference and I'd rather my hardtail was much lighter than the full sus so decision made!
  • good choice, great bike.
