record, chorus or centaur cassette

Hey folks, looking for a new cassette for some new wheels....

Looking at record (dear), chorus (not so bad) and centaur (reasonable!).
The price diff between chorus and centaur seems to be not too much... but the jump to record is a lot. Its going on a bike with full centaur and chorus cranks.

Weight wise, there doesn't seem to be a lot in it... about 40 odd grams? Is the performance of record *that* much better? Or would I not even notice? Is chorus noticeably better than centaur on the cassette?

There is a reason why Record is more expensive but if you haven't owned the groupset you wouldn't know.

The larger sprockets on a record cassette are the reason for the extra cost. They are made from titanium which is more costly, but a softer metal than steel. The theory is that elite level riders use these sprockets less often, so the higher wear rate is not an issue against grams saved. For regular riders, the full cassette probably gets used equally, so I would advise going for Chorus or lower. I've certainly never noticed a difference in performance terms between record and chorus cassettes. That doesn't stop me buying record now and again though, cos I'm a bit of a weight weenie
  • ah right.... I didn't know that was the reason why the mix of materials.
leaning towards chorus now! although I think there's only a difference of about 20 grams between centaur/chorus.

If it helps I started off with Record, moved the replacement across to Chorus x2 and finally to Veloce.

Just out of interest (and being a vuture for others posts!!) what sprocket ratio are you after?

Its just that I have a brand new but unboxed Record cassette I'm getting rid of in 13-29 ratio

It came with a set of wheels I bought (part of a deal) but the ratio is far bigger than I need

Might be able to do a deal where you get Record quality for Chorus money, if the ratio is what you're after??
  • ah sorry... it was a 12-25 I was looking for.
that would have been a damn good deal!

  • Shame, but if you change your mind, I've put it in the classifieds section

Don't fart about with a Record cassette, get Veloce.....if you want feel good factor or lower weight spend the money on something that is less of a consumable and a bigger badge!!
I'd rather walk than use Shimano

Chorus and Centaur cassettes have the same sprockets and the only difference is the sprocket carriers and spacers. I had a Centaur cassette on my training wheels and a Record cassette on my best wheels and didn't notice any difference at all.

If you're worried about the 40g difference between them all then just make sure you have a piss or a dump before you go out - hey presto, job sorted.
  • An extra vote for the veloce or centaur cassette here. It's the part of a bike that wears out (besides the chain and there are only 2 chains across the campy range) so why would you spend so much on it?

Veloce has individual sprockets so they potentially might damage alloy freehub bodies.

  • Thanks, that's new information to me. :)

AFAIR, it used to be just one chain across the board!

They are pretty much the same chain. Veloce is the base model. Chorus has little drilled out bits in the plates and Record has hollow pins. I think that is the right order...
