Where was that from, please, a bit of carbon never harms you.

Merlin cycles. £400 normally, but they had 5% off groupsets at the time.

OTOH I've had road bikes with Record. Dura Ace and Ultegra. All I buy these days is Ultegra -it's functionally and comestically as good as Dura Ace, and (IME)) beats Campag hands down for design, servicability and reliablity. You'll get different views ont his one, but it seems to me that people who like bikes tend to go for Campag, while people who like riding tend to go for Shimano.

Look out for last years models or ex-display stock. my local Giant dealer had his own bike for sale. Specced with Ultegra and Ksyrium SSLs he sold it for £1800 (rrp £2500) and it was only a few months old. I got his LeMond Victoire when he got the Giant

I think Shimano are changing their cable routing due to losing sales both to campag and SRAM on aesthetic grounds ... and obvlously loads of people with DA will want the visual upgrade (shifting might well actually be worse with the more tortuous route)

I would definitely not spec SRAM on a new bike other than Red but that is high end and out of budget, but some people have had a good experience.

On a budget I'd go for Centaur or Ultegra SL ... proven tachnology, light weight and low cost relative to Record and Red. Centaur in particular weights only slightly more than Dura Ace and has pretty much all the technology of Record but costs less than half the price

I've not ridden Campag but have SRAM Rival, Force and had 105, Ultegra and DA,
SRAM Rival is as good as DA

What's your bad experience with Rival and Force or is it all marketing hype

I've test ridden SRAM and didn't like it as much as either Shimano or Campag. The brakes I found were poor and didn't like the shifting technque ... perhaps I should have given it longer . The hood shapes I did like.

Force is way overpriced, Rival is nearly as light and functionally no different for the same money.

This isn't all about personal experience though ... others have ridden and tested the lower SRAM groups and found significant problems ... both the recalls and the drag in the chainset. Those two alone are enough to put me off ...

but I believe a lot has improved with RED, so would be keen to give it a go over a longer period ... at the US prices rather than UK.
