SIS non SIS mix
If needed, could I fit an 'indexed' rear mech to my otherwise non-indexed old commuter? I run an old 105 non-SIS set up, and have just possibly bent the rear mech (see thread "Damage a broken spoke...")
If I need a new mech, may just replace with a modern cheapy mech eg a Sora
Alternatively (hope you're still awake), can you run a (say) 8-speed cassette with an old fasioned gear set up like my 105s? (should I decide to get new wheels)
I have a secret plan to renovate my old 531 frame and fit new (cheap) bits...if it's not too badly damaged, that is...

It's just a hill. Get over it.

If you have 130mm OLN rear spacing and you stay with friction shifters you can use any cassette that will fit on your wheels. As reddragon says it is the shifters that are indexed. You could use 8,9 or 10 from either Shimano or Campag as long as you use the right chain. If you went to 10sp you may have issues with the chainrings but probably not.0

In the past I've used a bottom line shimano rear mech with hanger, when I buggred teh thread on my Kona up, with an equally expensive shifter. It didn't want to index up with STX StIs  so had to go with the friction option till I could put a thread repair widget in.I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0
