A friend is upgrading from a GT Avalanche 1.0 to her first full suss bike which she plans on riding the Trans Wales on. She will be riding for fun rather than competetively but it needs to be light and quick. She also wants to use it for general xc/local trail/ trail centre use so it needs to fairly competent all round rather than purely race orientated. Max budget £1500.
So is she better off with a 4 inch bike like the Giant Anthem/ Commencal 4.2/ Spesh equivalent or should she be looking at at 5 inch more trail orientated bike?

I would go for a 5 incher as it is less specialised twards xc and silly speed or even sillier speed descents can be attempted. yes you can do them on a four incher but five allows you to push the boundaries even further. go for a light all mountain rig and see if her riding style changes!I never touched it! It was broke when I got here.0
