Is your wheel 126mm or 130mm OLN (over lock nuts width) and is it a screw on block or a cassette. If 130 and a cassette then probaly yes. If either of the others then almost certainly not. This for Shimano. Campag may differ. Usefull info here.

Thanks for info, don't know as its an ebay item - I need a replacement winter wheel as cheaply as possible and there are a couple with 7 spd for sale. My bike has got sora 8 speed.0

if its a cassette then you'll need a new freehub, which is wider, and re-dish your wheel to accommodate the wider cassette
not really worth it to be honest, although I have done it in the past
better off buying a 8/9 speed wheel IMO for the money/hassle you spendFacts are meaningless, you can use facts to prove anything that's remotely true! - Homer0 -
The 8 spd is not a cassette its a screw on block, otherwise I would need a different hub! Thats why I want toi take an old hub (7spd) that has a screw on block and see if I can fit an 8 spd block on. I didnt think 8 and 9 spd were compatible....one is a cassette, the other isnt, or have I got that wrong?0
